I just went to the Q&A for BYUSA Presidency candidates.

The experience cemented my satisfaction in having chosen to work for the Green Team.

Voting is next week fellas. Do it.

1st Round: Mon - Wed

So what does your party offer? I haven't heard anything on issues and I couldn't go to the Q&A.

Until 7:30am Monday, I am forbidden from openly discussing more than what is published, unless you agree to be a campaign volunteer and promote Adam and Chance next week.

What is printed:

Initiatives:
"-Improve relations with Provo
City Council
-Hold Town Hall meetings
-Host pre- and post-game
events at athletic events
-Advertise in the Daily
Universe for BYUSA events
and programs
-Continue efforts to encourage
students to redefine service
-Solicit ideas for BYUSA events
and programs
-Recruit volunteers"

I have prepared comments on these initiatives and will post them Monday at 730am. Should I post earlier, I run the risk of penalizing Adam and Chance's campaign.

Brief bios printed in the Universe this week:

"Adam is a junior from Upper Hutt, New Zealand, majoring in business
management. He loves to sing, dance and socialize. Adam likes camping
and “roughing it.” By default Adam likes politics because his roommate
Chance is a political enthusiast.
“I love people, and I love being able to work with so many different students from different parts of America and different parts of the international community,” Ruri said
Chance is a senior from Fruitland, N.M., majoring in recreational therapy. He loves outdoor activities like fishing. Chance loves movies, politics, long
boarding and working with the youth. “BYUSA is really set in place to help other students gain service experience, to gain other leadership experience,” Basinger said. To find out more about the campaign of Adam and Chance, visit www.adamandchance.com."

I will now comment on these initiatives so they will be more meaningful to you that super concise statements about issues you may not fully understand or be familiar with.

I am not as familiar with the other candidate pairs or their initiatives, but I am willing to comment on their initiatives because I am familiar with BYUSA.

The Provo City Council, has and has had for several years an open spot on the council designated for a student representative of BYU. The position is not filled by city election and casts no vote on city issues. The position does sit on the council and may speak in meetings as would other council members. The BYU administration has chosen to NOT appoint a student, or allow a student to be elected. Reasoning is that BYU does not want the comments and opinions of one student to be perceived as official statements from BYU. So, A&C desire to still have better lines of communication between the council and BYU students, mostly revolving around issues that involve students directly. The idea is for the BYUSA presidency to be aware of pending Provo City Council decisions that affect students (like the parking issue) and make sure those issues are communicated to the students...either via University Comms emails, coverage in the Daily Universe, etc.

Town Hall meetings, to my understanding, are when members of the Provo City council come to BYU campus to hold an open meeting where BYU students may come and voice their concerns about local issues. This seemingly would appeal to more students than the option of a student going to an actual city council meeting.

Pre- and post- athletic events sponsored by BYUSA. More free stuff, more activities for all students to come enjoy.

Universe "Advertisement" would be a 1/2 page section or something once or twice a week that has a report on BYSUA activity. Likely material: progress on promised campaign initiatives, what each of the 5 BYSUA areas are working on and progress there (issues raised with SAC, projects by SHA, upcoming events for Campus Activities, Communications campaigns, and what's happening with Clubs), volunteer opportunities for that week, calendar of events for the week/month, etc.

Pres. Osguthorpe (our Area 70) is behind the new Redefine Service campaign that the current BYUSA presidency just began. Pres. Osguthorpe's vision is that it will be ongoing. Adam and Chance plan to keep it alive.

Soliciting ideas for BYUSA events and programs means helping BYUSA have a more open reputation on campus. They'd like to open BYUSA resources to all students--meaning any student could fill out an Event Approval Form for an activity and the put it on, any student could have access to funds for an event they think would be worthwhile to sponsor on campus. Basically the idea is to make it possible for students who do not regularly volunteer for BYUSA to put on the same kind of events that BYUSA does regularly. This would bypass initial steps of becoming a department club, or becoming a BYUSA club, or convincing a faculty group to sponsor you idea, etc.

For recruiting volunteers, Adam and Chance plan to put some people fully in charge of the volunteer database. Currently, BYUSA has a huge list of people who have said they would like to volunteer--but hardly anyone in the office uses it because no one is in charge of managing it or making it user friendly. This is a data management/communications issue.
